Zila Parishad

Zilla parishad: The Zilla parishad is the highest body in the Panchayat Raj system. It provides a vital link between the village Panchayat, the block samiti and the state government. It looks after the welfare of the district as a whole.Composition: All the presidents of the block samiti in a district are member of the Zilla parishad. Member of the state legislature, members of parliament, chairpersons of municipal boards and mayors of corporation from the district, are also member of the Zilla parishad.Functions•    It prepares plans for the development of the district based on reports submitted by the block samiti and the gram Sabha.•    Improvement in agricultural production. Sanitation and health, maintenance of roads and other developmental action are some of the tasks taken up by the Zilla parishads.•    It builds and maintains secondary, vocational and industrial schools in the district.Important Facts:1.    There are 234,078 Panchayati Raj institutions in the country.2.    In India, April 24th is celebrated as National Panchayati Raj Diwas every year. The day marks the passing of the Constitution Act (73rd Amendment), 1992, that came into existence with effect from April 24, 1993.3.    Rajasthan was the first state to establish Panchayti Raj. It was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 2, 1959 in Nagaur district.4.    Second state to establish Panchayati Raj was Andhra Pradesh. (1959)
